Jonathan Williams
Editor | Journalist
Jonathan Williams is the daily news editor at the Salem Statesman Journal and Eugene Register-Guard in Salem and Eugene, Oregon.
Previously, Williams was the associate editor of The Astorian in Astoria, Oregon, where he assisted in editing and coordinating coverage for The Astorian. He oversaw production of Coast Weekend, an arts and entertainment weekly, and the Seaside Signal, a weekly newspaper focusing on the communities of Gearhart and Seaside. He also produced Our Coast, an award-winning yearly lifestyle magazine covering roughly 60 miles of the north Oregon and southwest Washington state coast, in addition to serving as editor of Coast River Business Journal.
A native of Astoria, Williams saw the North Coast transform itself from gritty cities into a bustling mecca for the arts, craft breweries and Northwest history and culture. He helped chronicled this in “Gritty to pretty: Astoria’s transformative decade,” an award-winning special section.
“Hunker/rise/surge: Coronavirus 2020,” a print and digital project Williams led that documented the North Coast’s response to the pandemic, won first place for best special section in the 2020 Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association contest.
Williams has published stories in Syracuse.com and The Post-Standard, NYup.com, Symphony Magazine, the Post and Courier in Charleston, South Carolina, and Oregon Public Broadcasting.
When he’s not editing or writing, Williams enjoys reading, running, swimming and biking, as well as competing in half marathons and triathlons.
Williams is a May 2018 graduate of the Goldring Arts Journalism master's program at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. He holds a bachelor’s of arts degree in English and mass communication from Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon.
